Science Week 7 Term 2

Science will be twice per week.

  • Lesson 1: This will be an Experiment that involves blogging. You will be expected to open a new post, copy Mr Palmer's blog and paste it on your new post.
  • Lesson 2: This will be an Investigation that relates to the topic from Lesson 1. It will be own choice and displayed in a way that you prefer. For example - PowerPoint, Doc, etc

Expectations:
  • 1 blog must be completed per Hurumanu lesson.
  • A completed blog must have the four headings ( Aim, Method, Findings, Conclusion), correct writing and punctuation under each heading and be published. No post, no points.
  • 2 images of the experiment / investigation on the blog.
Using the Scientific method of investigation:

Aim: What the experiment / investigation is about.
Method: Instructions on how the experiment / investigation is carried out. This includes the equipment.
Findings: What have we learnt or found out from our experiment / investigation. This is called Data, Information or Facts. It is displayed in a chart, table or picture.
Conclusion:

PE

In PE this term we are learning to play Ki O Rahi. We have PE on Tuesdays and Fridays this term so this is a mix of all we did this term so far.

 At the start of PE we just played a few games to get used to being in a team. The first game we played was bench ball it was pretty fun to play. I forgot who was in my team but I remember it was all girls. Then when I was away apparently my class played multi sport, I don't know what they did because I wasn't there.

After we got kind of used to being in teams we started to play games that are similar to Ki O Rahi. I forgot the names of the games. After that we got in teams to be in for the rest of the term we made a doc about the name of our team and our mascot. Our team name was the panda's. Today we played Ki O Rahi for real in the teams we chose. It was pretty hard because we didn't know exactly how to play.

That's all we have done so far in this term.

Scones

In science we were making scones and this is how we did it.

Aim: To look at different kitchen ingredients in scones and their effects.


The normal scone recipe:

  • 1/2 cup Edmonds standard flour
  • 1 tsp Edmonds baking powder  or 1 tsp baking soda                            
  • 2 tsp butter
  • 1/4 cup milk, approximately or 1/4 cup lemonade.

We had to do the normal recipe for scones then we had to choose a little different ingredient than in the normal recipe

The recipes my group did:

1. Normal
2. Normal but instead of milk we used lemonade.
3. Normal but instead of baking soda we used baking powder


Materials:

1. Milk or lemonade
2. Butter
3. Baking powder or soda
4. Bowl
5. Something to mix with
6. A Chromebook

Process

Step 1: Get in a group
Step 2: Find out what person is doing what, mixing in the bowl, putting it on the bake sheet, or getting the ingredients
Step 3: Get your ingredients
Step 4: Wait for the mixer to finish mixing the ingredients
Step 5: Put the dough on the bake sheet
Step 6: Do all that again 2 more times

Findings:

Conclusion:

My normal scone was 50 mm or 5 cm tall, it was dry and it was a creamy colour. The second scone was with lemonade instead of milk also it was 45 mm or 4.5 cm tall and it was a creamy white colour. Also the last scone was with baking powder instead or baking soda, it was a golden colour. The normal scone tasted pretty dry, the 2nd scone tasted sweet but moist and the 3rd scone tasted burnt but moist in the middle. The scones were all cooked for 10 minutes and they were also cooked and 200 degrees.

Drama

This week in drama with Miss Tozer we were talking about physical well being and we were making a video on what physical well being is and how to show it. Our group did a stop motion and we did 6 facts how to keep your physical well being healthy.

Then with Miss Clark we were starting to practice for the end performance we were going to going to share with the yr 7&8s. Today we got into groups of 2 - 4 people in the group. The people in my group were Meleana, Danni and I. We had to choose one of the four parts of well being. We got put in spiritual and we had to ask Miss Tozer for some ideas and she just told us, Meditation, reading a book or praying. Because we tried to think of our own ideas. But when we couldn't Miss Tozer gave us those 3 ideas. We actually used one and it was meditating.

When we were preforming us just standing there meditating I don't know why but I laughed for no reason. So I feel over trying not to laugh and then we were done so I ran back to my seat. After that we watched all the groups and then we went to morning tea.

Chromatography/ With Skittles and water

Today in home chemistry we did an experiment with skittles and water. It was pretty fun and this is the third time I did this experiment.

This is what we needed

Materials;

1. A container
2. Some water
3. Skittles
4. A lid for the container
5. A device to take pictures
6. Also a device to make a blog post

Process:

Step 1: Get one of those little container and the skittles were already in the container
Step 2: Sit back down and wait for the teacher to pour the water in your container
Step 3: After the teacher has put the water in wait for something to happen
Step 4: Take a picture of the skittles in the water when it just starts to do something
Step 5: Wait like 5 minutes then look at the container and take a picture of what has happened
Step 6: When your done make a blog post about what happened

Findings: Write about what happened. When we first put the water in with the skittles it just started to show the colour just around the skittles and we had to take a picture of the skittles of when this happened. Then a few minutes later the container was covered with the colours from the skittles.

Reflection: What have I learnt from this experiment? That even if you don't have much time and you want to do a fun experiment you can do this one. It takes less than 10 minutes and it looks cool when your done with the experiment.

What did the colours do? They went through the water but they didn't mix together.
Did the colours mix together? Not until I moved the container.
Why or why not? No because I think the skittle colours we in its own space in the container until I waked over to tip the water out.

Water and Salt Experiment

Today in home chemistry we are learning about, how much salt in water will help it not freeze in the freezer overnight. Here is what I found out.

The Plan.

Task 1; Read the question carefully and write the answer to these questions. 

  1. What do we need to find out? How much salt in water will not make it freeze in water
  2. How will we find it out? Try our method out and if it doesn't work it doesn't work
  3. How will we record what we find? In our books or on our chromebook
  4. What equipment do we need for the experiment? A cup of water, salt and a freezer
  5. How long will it take? Overnight is it works the first time but it i doesn't work maybe a few nights

The Procedure

Task 2: What are the steps that you will take to make the experiment? 

List them in 6 steps.

Step 1; Get a cup with water in it and get some salt
Step 2: Get some spoons to put the salt in the cup
Step 3: Put the salt in the cup
Step 4: Carefully put it in the freezer and leave it overnight
Step 5: Check it the next morning the water froze or not
Step 6: If it didn't work try again

The Process

Task 3: Draw on a piece of A4 paper the 6 steps that you will use to test the amount of salt in water before freezing. When we are making drawings in science  it needs to be labelled clearly, kept tidy and named. Once you have completed the drawing it must be photographed and uploaded to your blog.

Chromatography/ With coloured pens

Today in home chemistry we are learning about Chromatography. The Chromatography we are learning about is putting felt pens on a piece of paper then putting the end of the paper in water and putting skittles in water and waiting for the result. 

Materials;

1. A piece of chromatography paper
2. A pencil and ruler 
3. A cup of water
4. Felt water based pens, we did red, black and green
5.  A Chromebook or I pad to get photos
6. A Chromebook or i pad to do a blog post about it

Process:

Step 1: We got the chromatography paper and we write lines on each end, one end was 1 cm and the other end was 2 cm
Step 2: We put 3 dots with 3 colours on the line
Step 3: After that we put the paper in the water and let it sit
Step 4: We got our Chromebooks out to take some photos
Step 5: We got some photos on our camera
Step 6: We had to start doing a blog post about what we did

Findings: Write about what happened. At the start it was just wet paper but after a while a few different colours came out of just the 3 colours. I can't remember exactly what the colours were but I knew there was about 6 or 7 on the 1 piece of paper. After that we let it sit and moved on to a different experiment

When We Have a Reliever

Today with our reliever I was finished what the class had to do that was on the board so I asked my Mr White if I could sit with my friends outside and read my book. After I got bored of reading my book I asked if I could go on Mathletics and Mr White said yes. When we have guest in our class I should be quiet when they are talking what I always do when someone new is in our class and someone who has been in our class for a while as well. Also when a guest is in our class when they ask you questions about what you are doing you should tell them what you are doing.  Next time I will not ask to sit with my friends when I finished my work. Also I won't ask to go outside with my friends.

Home Chemestry Week 2

Last week my class and Miss Tozers class were doing home chemistry. We do home chemistry and drama at different times and days. Today day for home chemistry, we had to find the chemical name for different items and if you didn't have a device  you budded up in a pair or a group of 3. I didn't have a device neither did Danni so we budded up with Reisha. So our group was Reisha, Danni and I.

What we had to figure out in science this week is.....

The process / what we had to do:

So the first chemical name from our list was salt . The chemical name for salt is Sodium Chloride, the next thing was surf we couldn't find anything different to something else on our list so we put laundry detergent. After that was white vinegar the chemical name for that was Acetic Acid, the next thing was baking soda and the chemical name for that is Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate and that's the same as baking powder which is after baking soda.

Next was cleaner and the chemical name is  Muriatic Acid. The thing that had the same thing as surf was detergent and the chemical name is Carboxyic Acids. Next was lemonade but there was no chemical name so we did the biggest ingredient which is Glucose H20. After was sugar and the chemical name is Glucose, the last thing was citric acid and the chemical name is Anhydrous.

Science

On Tuesday we did an experiment and it was called........ Red Cabbage Indicator.

We had to see how many different colours cabbage juice and different liquids could make.

First we had to get into groups the girl in my group names were Elisha Mae and Ella. 

The equipment names were: Hear proof mat, bunsen burner, tri pod, pot, test tubes, beacer.

The ingredients were: Water, red cabbage.

The first thing we did is grab our equitment and go to where we were working. After that we put water in our beacer an we also put our cabbage in at the same time. Then we put our tri pod over our bunsen burner, then we turned out bunsen burner on. We had to wait for the cabbage to boil and when it boiled we couned in our head to 2 minutes then turn the burner off.

After that we drained the juice out and put the juice into test tubes and we put different liquids in it. If it is green it is the ph level of 10. If it was red the ph level is 2.
